I was never a big fan of classics until I picked up this book to read for my English class. Though more than cautious at first, I soon found that I couldn't put it down and stayed up quite late to finish it. For those of you who have heard something about the book, you may recognize the names Elizabeth, Jane, Bingley, and of course, Mr. Darcy.
For those of you not interested in romance this book may not be the right one for you, but certainly give a try. Austen's beautiful writing and characters bring to life 1800 England in a way even movies cannot. You can hear the sound of horses clip clopping down the cobbled street, see Elizabeth running through a muddy field.
However, it's not just the romance that entices the reader, but rather the relationship between different members of the society: Elizabeth's love for her sister, Mr. Bennet's pride for his daughters, and a general dislike of the rest of the family.
Being a classic, Pride and Prejudice also comes with its share of themes and symbols, all of which make for great conversations and debates. The role of women in society, reason and rationality vs. emotions and feelings, and the social values surround the time period are few of many debated topics from this book.
