There are many words I could use to describe this book, but I think the most well suited one would be inspiring. The strength you see in the characters, not just Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters, but also in their parents and friends, is really awe inspiring. No matter the hardships they faced, no matter the pain they endured, every single one of them was there for each other and that's the kind of strength I would like to see grow in this world.
The Fault In Our Stars follows the story of a 16 year old victim of cancer, Hazel. Hazel Grace Lancaster was diagnosed with Stage 4 Thyroid cancer with metastasis forming in her lungs, but managed to live with her disease owing to doses of an experimental drug called Phalanxifor. Due to the depression that resulted from her treatment, Hazel attends a weekly Support Group that meets in the "Literal Heart of Jesus" every Wednesday. One day, she finds a new face at this meeting, the face of a good looking boy that turned out to be friends with a boy named Issac. As any story goes, the two soon become good friends, but just when it was starting to get good, disaster strikes, bringing out the strength that defines this novel.
Over the past year, I have found that the more I dwell on this book, the more it means to me. The Fault In Our Stars really brings to light the harsh reality of life and the strength it requires to get through it. Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases in my mind because it causes physical pain along with emotional pain. John Green does an amazing job of portraying the effects of this malady in a way I have never seen any other author do. So I would like to thank John Green for opening up my eyes and my heart to the pain that lies around us. I hope this book inspires you to do something about cancer, whether its by donating money and/or time to cancer societies around you or even by simply spreading awareness of it.
Special thanks to John Green for writing this inspiring novel and inspiring the movie that's trailer came out today and my best friend, Lex O. Phile, and her inspiring post about strength on her blog, http://whatdoesthemean.blogspot.com/.
